LA QUINTA, Calif. – The shot that helped Si Woo Kim win at The American Express wasn’t as fearless as it might appear.

Kim clung to part of the lead and was 288 Yards from the green when he pulled out his driver. It seemed an overly bold shot to some observers considering how crowded the leaderboard was, but the 25-year-old actually handled the smart game.

« Every day [he hits that shot] », said Kim’s caddy Brian Vranesh. « He was safer with this shot because his 3-wood can tip to the left [towards a water hazard], but once we got it going we knew it would be close to the green. »

Kims second shot ricocheted off just short of the green and he calmly shot to 6 feet for a birdie that moved him one shot off the field.

« I was trying to keep it safe so I didn’t hit the 3-wood and then I tried to use the hill on the right, so I knocked the driver off the deck there, « said Kim, who finished with a bogey-free 64 for a one-stroke win over Patrick Cantlay.
