A group of Sydney fishermen were not fully equipped for their monster find over the weekend after wrapping a giant 395 kg tiger shark during a fishing competition.

Paul Barning, a member of the Port Hacking Game Fishing Club, and his crew were photographed on a boat called the « Dark Horse » as they struggled to get the giant fish onto their ship.

The tiger shark was caught on a 15 kg break line about 15 km offshore between Botany Bay and Port Hacking during the NSW Game Fishing Association’s interclub state championships over the weekend.

The successful catch came after the crew lost a fish they caught the day before after trying for six hours to get it on board.

Common shark species can grow up to 600 cm long and weigh up to 1000 kg, according to the NSW Department of Primary Industries, and are more popular with wild fishermen than commercial fishermen because of their low market value.

NSWGFA records show that the largest tiger shark captured was a 694.5 kg male that was landed by Jason Hewitt of Swansea in 2008.

Although the animal is not protected in Australia, the Australian Marine Conservation Society and Humane Society International are increasingly calling for it to be classified as endangered after a study found a shocking 71 percent drop in its population over three decades.
