Mick Cronin may not be as eager to bring UCLA back to San Diego state once his understaffed Bruins have been rudely received by the deep, disruptive Aztecs trained by old friend Brian Dutcher.

Matt Mitchell and Jordan Schakel each scored 15 points and SDSU used a suffocating defense and 3-point shots for both teams at the season opener on Wednesday evening to humiliate UCLA 73-58 in 22nd place.

Mitchell and Schakel took a 3-0 lead early in the second half and the Aztecs dominated the rest of the way in the empty Viejas Arena. Aguek Arop and Terrell Gomez each scored 10 points for the state of San Diego, which stood 30-2 last season and was expecting the highest seed ever in the NCAA tournament before being canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

« It’s a first step. We’re looking forward to a win and we’re happy to actually play basketball. It’s been 264 days since we played, « said Dutcher.

« We’ve always had a defensive identity and I think that showed up again tonight. The good news is that in addition to our game, this team has plenty of room for growth on both ends of the floor. ”

UCLA, which played on the SDSU home course for the first time since December 1991, was without key player Jalen Hill and Transfer Johnny Juzang. Chris Smith, the Bruins’ only senior, committed his fourth foul in the middle of the second half and came out – then was fouled 4:47. He scored 10 points, none after half time.

Jaime Jacquez Jr. . had 17 points for UCLA and Cody Riley added 14 points and 12 rebounds.

The game was part of a multi-team event that also includes Pepperdine and UC Irvine. UCLA and SDSU were supposed to be playing in a bubble in Orlando, but it fell apart. Long-time friends Dutcher and Cronin quickly put this event together.

« Our physical exertion has been poor and our mental exertion may have been worse when that is possible, » said the second year Bruins coach.

« We were physically played out. I’ve been doing this for a long time. . . . You go out on the streets and are only physically beaten up like we were beaten up, and our defenses have been cruel. We didn’t follow the scouting report at all. We got beat up from dribbling, we walked away from the shooters, we did amazing things, to be honest. Like total regression. I don’t know if this results from confidence – I don’t know what it results from. But of course I have to fix it immediately. ”

Mitchell and Schakel each scored three 3-point points, and the Aztecs, selected as the Mountain West Conference regular season champions, came out 9 of 23 behind the arch.

The Bruins, who went between 19 and 12 last year and were selected to win the Pac-12 this season, played well for the first eight minutes before the SDSU defense took their toll.

Mitchell hit a jumper to start an 8-0 run in the middle of the first half, giving the Aztecs a 23:19 advantage. Joshua Tomiac made a jumper and Gomez, an older senior transfer, hit two free throws before Nathan Mensah sank a baseline jumper.

Jacquez lay down to pull the Bruins to 30-28 and was fouled but missed the free throw. Arop scored a layup and two free throws in the last minute for a 34-28 lead at halftime.

« I just think we have great depth, » said Dutcher. « We used a lot of people, 10 people, and we don’t give off much. This could be as deep a team as we ever had. UCLA was understaffed. They were missing two players, possibly two starters so I think we worn them out. We recorded them in full court for the whole game and I think we just wore them out to the point where they might have been tired at the end of the game. ”

When asked if his players were bothered by the false noise of the crowd in the usually noisy Viejas Arena, Cronin said, « The problem wasn’t the noise of the crowd. The problem was the state of San Diego, their tenacity, their execution. ”

UCLA: Hill, a 6-10 year old swing man, has tendinitis in his right knee and is commonplace. Juzang, a Kentucky transfer, has a stress reaction in his right foot and is unlikely to play this week.

San Diego State: The Aztecs used their tough defenses in the first half to force UCLA into 10 turnovers and a drought that allowed SDSU to take the lead.

UCLA will play Pepperdine on Friday. UCLA have won the last five meetings by a margin of 19-4.

SDSU will meet UC Irvine on Friday for the first time since 1997. The Aztecs have won three times in a row.
