The New York Jets have reached a new milestone in their quest for unwanted NFL history: 10 direct losses at the start of the season.
The Jets’ comeback was short when they lost 34:28 to the Chargers at the SoFi stadium on Sunday. The Jets are 0-10 for the first time in franchise history. The Jets are now in close proximity to join the 2008 and 2017 Browns Lions as the only 0-16 teams in NFL history.
This was probably the best of all worlds for Jets fans. They saw their team fight back from an early hole and some of their newbies played a key role in it.
Wide receiver Denzel Mims had a team with three high catches for 71 yards. And after a difficult first half, cornerback Bryce Hall made some big games that helped the Jets get back into the game.
But they kept losing, which gets them up to speed ahead of the one-loss Jaguars to make first choice in the next draft.
Although the Jets fell 31-13 with five minutes to go in the third quarter, they stormed back and had a chance to end the game by the end of the fourth quarter. Part of that is the Chargers, which turned out to be totally incapable by a margin – they blew two 17-point advantages to lose this season.
But the Jets were much more aggressive and effective on offense even after half-time, which helped them get back into the game.
With 2:48 the Jets had the ball alone 47 down 34-26. They made it to Chargers 32, but the drive stopped there. Flacco’s deep pass to rookie Denzel Mims fell harmlessly to the left at 1:46 and the Jets had to pass the ball to the Chargers.
The Jets have now been 0-10 for the past three seasons if quarterback Sam Darnold doesn’t start. Joe Flacco finished 15-of-30 for 3205 yards, two touchdowns and one brutal interception.
The defense of the Jets struggled mostly in the first three quarters. Charger novice Justin Herbert completed 37 of 49 passes for 366 yards and three touchdowns and receiver Keenan Allen had 16 catches for 141 yards and one touchdown.
The Jets had some fights with their impressive rally, but they didn’t win. And in the end, that was probably the best for her long-term future.
The Jets marched across the field for a touchdown at the end of the third quarter to stay within striking distance. And they managed to pull within a single score again at the end of the fourth quarter, and Mims was a big reason for that.
The rookie had a phenomenal catch in the third quarter, reaching over his head in flight to pull a 27-yard pass down the sideline in close cover. And then he got the Jets into the red zone by taking a pass interference penalty on another deep pass.
Mims had two other major games while on the run in the fourth quarter, which allowed them to narrow the gap to 34-26 in four minutes.
In fourth and fifth places with the Jets at age 30, Mims caught a 25 yard pass to keep her hopes alive. And then, in third and seventh place on the Chargers 42, Mims got another pass near the sideline and made a hard catch while he went out of hand.
That was questionable as Mims appeared to be juggling the ball as it went down. But the jets were moving a bit fast and it was never checked.
The Jets offensive was much better in the second half because they started throwing the deep ball. Even when they weren’t connected, Mims and Breshad Perriman opened up and it changed the game because the Jets had to be responsible.
The Jets couldn’t ask for much more from Mims at the beginning of his career. He’s shown great hands, remarkable intensity, especially as a blocker, and great flair for a player with so little experience and no preparation on the field before stepping onto the field a few weeks ago.
The Jets had their best start to the season and impressed in all three phases of the game.
Your defense stopped the chargers on the inaugural ride. Special teams gave them a great field position as Henry Anderson hit his man and blocked the Chargers barge with ease and gave the ball to the Jets on the Chargers 29.
And then the offense confirmed it. Frank Gore ran back 24 yards three times to get the Jets onto the chargers five-yard line, and rookie La’Mical Perine proved elusive, dancing through the defense for a five-yard touchdown run – the second Touchdown from his career – that gives the Jets a 6-0 lead.
The defense made another big game on the chargers on the next trip when Marcus Maye forced a fumble near the goal line and the Jets recovered. But everything went wrong in one game.
On the first descent, Flacco stared at receiver Jamison Crowder and threw a pass in his direction near the sideline.

Tevaughn Campbell, who spent time with the Jets at training camp in 2019, read it all the way. He took it off and went to the end zone to start the landing. It was a shocking mistake by Flacco, who played so well against the Patriots on his first pass.
And it was the beginning of 24 consecutive charging points that the jets put in a huge hole.
Left tackle George Fant suffered an ankle injury in the first half and did not return. Fant was rolled up and was able to walk off the field with a severe limp, but the broadcast said he had brought a cart back to the locker room. . . . Perine left the game with an ankle injury and did not return.
