Bayern Munich lost points for the second time this season when Werder Bremen scored a 1-1 draw on Saturday.
Maximilian Eggestein’s well-worked goal gave the visitors a well-deserved lead towards the end of the first half before the champions hit back through Kingsley Coman after an hour.
But they couldn’t build on their balance, as a persistent performance by Florian Kohfeldt’s men earned a well-deserved share of the booty.
Werder traveled to the Allianz Arena after avoiding defeat in their last four games, even though each of those games ended in a draw.
And after winning 10 straight wins, Bayern would have expected to dominate from the start instead of giving up the best chances of the first half.
Only a brilliant Manuel Neuer saved Josh Sargent early from close range before Leonardo Bittencourt shot into the side netting when he might have done better.
The hosts’ rhythm was undoubtedly hampered by Theo Hernandez’s early loss to injury, a punch that featured Leon Goretzka and both Javi Martinez and David Alaba switched positions.
Werder used this uncertainty in the background when Sargent stormed into the flank from Martinez and Alaba before retiring for Eggestein just before the break to go home.
Milot Rashica should have made it twice shortly after the restart, which would have taken too long in a one-on-one situation and would have led Douglas Costa to crack the bar with a fake attempt.
This was the beginning of long overdue pressure from Bayern, which finally showed when Coman headed the back post in Goretzka’s right flank.
Despite the introduction of Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry from the bank, Hansi Flick’s men struggled to get a lot of attention in the last half hour.
In fact, only one more good one-handed stop by Neuer prevented the visitors from taking the win through Sargent with five minutes of normal time remaining.
Bayern’s grip on the top spot in the Bundesliga was loosened due to lost points. RB Leipzig can now draw level if they win against Eintracht Frankfurt later on Saturday
Any team that keeps Bayern Munich from winning at home has to defend well, and Werder certainly did that, with Marco Friedl arguably being the last three pick.
The Austrian led his team in tackles (four), clearances (nine) and interceptions (three) to ensure that Robert Lewandowski did not score a goal in a Bundesliga game for the first time this season.
David Alaba’s life may not have been made any easier with an early move from center-back to left-back, but the defender still fell short of his usual standards.
He only won 33 percent of his duels, made no tackles or interceptions and lost possession 20 times – more than any other Bayern player.
Bayern will return to the Champions League with Salzburg on Wednesday, while Bremen’s next Bundesliga appearance will take place in Wolfsburg on Friday.
