In the season debut of the NET Rankings – the NCAA’s evaluation tool used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee to determine a team’s résumé – Gonzaga and Baylor top their rankings in the same way as the AP Top 25 and Trainer polls. However, there have already been some serious differences in the metric, starting with Tennessee, which is at No.. 3 in the NET. It’s a higher than expected leaderboard that comes out two days after the first loss of the year.

The AP and Coaches polls will be updated later Monday, but neither Tennessee nor Illinois were the top five teams in both poll metrics last week. The vols were rated as low as no. 7 in the AP poll before a 20-point win over No.. 12 Missouri and one 8 point loss to Alabama this week. The Illinois were rated as low as no. 16 in the coaching poll and won their only game that week that was a home game against Purdue.

Michigan, Iowa, Houston, Texas, and Missouri make up the five teams that make up the No.. 6-10 digits in the NET.

One of the teams that was not ranked in the AP or trainer survey, but is now in the NET Top 25, is Colgate (No.. 16), Drake (No.. 20) and Syracuse (No.. 25). Since the NET is a two-component metric that adapts to the net adjusted efficiency and has a team score index based on the results and the quality of the opponent, it opens up the possibility of a more comprehensive and holistic picture of the sport.
