Governor General Julie Payette, representative of Queen Elizabeth II in Canada, resigned Thursday before a reportedly damning report of workplace harassment claims against her office was released.

The independent review was last July Ordered by the government when allegations of a « toxic » climate first surfaced in Rideau Hall – the official residence of the Governor General.

« I am committed to the integrity of my Viceroyship and the welfare of our country and our democratic institutions concluded that a new governor general should be appointed, « Payette said in a statement.

In the statement announcing both departures, Payette apologized for what she called « tension » at Rideau Hall over the past few months.

« Everyone has a right to a healthy and safe work environment at all times and in all circumstances, » she said.
