Proserpine recorded the highest rainfall in the state in the past 24 hours, with a whopping 357mm of rain falling.
Matt Marshall, forecaster for the Bureau of Meteorology, said most of the rain fell between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Saturday morning.
« The rain was pretty steady yesterday and then a big wave came through the wee hours of the morning, » said Marshall.
Nearby Preston also recorded 258mm of rain in the 24 hours before 9 a.m. on Saturday, while Jubilee Pocket recorded 230mm.
High totals were also recorded around Mackay, with 113mm recorded in Paget and 122mm recorded in Mt Jukes.
Mr Marshall said it was still raining in the Whitsunday and Mackay area today and there was still potential for more serious falls.
Proserpine, Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island were expected to be the most likely locations for heavy rainfall. However, Mr Marshall said it was difficult to pinpoint the exact areas in the line of fire.
« We still see the possibility of serious falls tomorrow and it will be a little less on Monday, » he said.
« There is still precipitation activity on Monday, but the biggest days are Saturday and Sunday. »
Mr. Marshall said there was a trough hanging around Townsville that connected to a southeasterly wave going up the coast.
« The southeast winds will keep increasing and they are pushing the trough away and pushing it north, » he said.
« You will also see that the winds are likely to pick up Monday through Tuesday. »
Mr. Marshall advised residents to keep an eye on BOM warnings and rain radar throughout the weekend.
