A 1952 Mantle baseball card became the most expensive sports card of all time, selling for $ 5.2 million, the PWCC Marketplace announced on Thursday.
The Topps PSA-rated card 9 based on the card rating system has surpassed the previous record of $ 3.94 million set in August 2009 for a signed rookie card by Mike Trout – only one of which was created.
At the Coat cards may only be three left in good condition.
« The 1952 Topps Mantle is the holy grail of sports cards, » said Gough. « I’ve dreamed of owning a Topps Mickey Mantle from 1952 since I started collecting cards as a kid. It’s the Mona Lisa of sports cards, and I’ve been looking for this high-profile example to share with industry experts, dealers, auction houses, friends and I’m thrilled to be the proud owner of this iconic card. «
» Based on our research, this is the most beautiful Topps Mantle PSA 9 from 1952, « said Jesse Craig, director for Doing business at PWCC Marketplace, in a press release.
The sky-high value of the Mantle card is due in part to the fact that not only is it the Yankee Legend’s rookie card, but it’s also taken from Topp’s first annual set – from many of which were thrown into the Hudson River eight years later.
The Mantle record is also part of a boom in sports memorabilia that began last year and continued in 2021.
