Bambolim: Odisha FC celebrated their first win of the season on Thursday, defeating Kerala Blasters 4-2 in a clash in the Indian Super League.

Kerala drew the first blood through Jordan Murray (7 ‘), but Odisha took the lead in the first half with an own goal by Jeakson Singh (22 ‘) and a goal by Steven Taylor (42’).

Diego Mauricio’s brace (50 ‘, 60’) then opted for Odisha. Gary Hooper (79 ‘) scored some consolation for Kerala but it turned out to be not enough to trigger a comeback.

It was Odisha who started better and took a corner in the third minute but Kerala scored the opener much against the course of the game.

KP Rahul headed Facundo Pereyra’s free kick at goal and a diving Arshdeep Singh could only parry it directly in Murray’s path. The latter made no mistake from an acute angle.

Jerry Mawihmingthanga found Mauricio on the right and his shot deflected Jeakson badly before he got past an Albino Gomes with wrong foot.

Vicente Gomez almost equalized when he headed in Pereyra’s cross, but it was straight to Arshdeep.

Kerala would soon regret the mistakes as Taylor exploited some poor defenders to give Odisha the lead just before the break.

Jerry’s cross found Taylor unmarked at the far post and the English defender quietly pushed in.

Jerry missed a good chance right after the restart, but Mauricio would soon make sure his miss was not punished. First, he scored Odisha’s third goal after Jerry’s praise found him clearly on goal.

The Brazilian received the ball from Nandhakumar Sekhar and hit a defender before rolling it past the goalkeeper from outside the area.

Kerala had a glimmer of hope in the 79th minute when Gary Hooper scored the second goal.

Jordan Murray did a good job of putting the ball in the box and found Hooper hit on goal. His shot deflected Taylor before he went inside.

The goal inspired the previously dejected Kerala players as they launched one attack after another on the Odisha goal.

The Odisha defense remained firm, however, when coach Stuart Baxter celebrated his first win of the season at the final whistle.
