MANILA, Philippines – Filipino Olympic gymnast Carlos Yulo was part of the athlete delegation that met with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach during the official visit to Tokyo and the city’s Summer Games venues.
Yulo joined Judoka Ono Shohei and Paralympic swimmer Kimura Keiichi from Japan, as well as Venezuelan judoka Elvismar Rodriguez during the meeting with Bach visiting the Olympic flame at the Japanese Olympic Museum.
Bach visited Tokyo on Sept.. until 18. November on his first city tour since the COVID-19 pandemic to meet with various Olympic officials and visit the venues for the Summer Games.
According to the official website of the Olympic Games, Bach met the new Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga for the first time in November. 16 in the latter official residence in Kentei.
« Our determination is to have successful and safe games in Tokyo next summer to prove that humanity defeated the virus, » Suga said during the meeting.
Bach said the IOC is determined to portray the Olympics as a symbol of unity amid one of the most difficult times of the century.
“We share the Prime Minister’s great commitment that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will take place next year. We firmly believe that safe Olympic Games will be a symbol of solidarity and unity, ”said Bach. “We have a number of measures against the COVID virus and together with our Japanese friends and partners we will ensure that these games are a light at the end of the dark tunnel we are in. ”
Bach also met with Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, who assured the IOC president that the city’s alignment would be a model for future games.
“We are determined to hold safe Olympic Games together with the IOC. Not only will we achieve cost reductions, but we will also leave a new model for future generations to organize the games, ”said Koike.
Yulo won gold in the floor exercise at the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships and is in Tokyo to prepare for the Olympic Games.
