While Vancouver police are investigating whether what happened in the video is a crime, others say the event may be a sign of how COVID restrictions have already brought severe homelessness to crisis levels and the couple nowhere private and leave behind with dignity.

« It’s really annoying that no one stopped, no one seemed to check if she was okay, » said Mebrat Beyene, the executive director of the WISH Drop-In Center, which is one of the three organizations considered to be on the event Wake-up calls indicate gender-based violence.

« What we are seeing now is an increased level of despair. We see all of these crises being fully exposed. ”

The low-resolution video, which has been around for at least a week, is undated and has been reposted several times.

One witness said the reason he was not shown in the video review of the woman concerned was because he felt she was not in distress.

The man who gave his name as DJay said he walked past the couple several times within half an hour that afternoon. He remembered the event towards the end of summer.

“Everything happens down here. That happened. I’ve seen it a couple of times, « he said. He said he thinks he has seen the couple again since that day.

Nearby, Marcella « Mama » Jacob, who sat in her seat on the corner, said that so many people have become homeless due to COVID restrictions, guests and others who may have slept on others’ couches nowhere.

« They don’t accept visitors, » said Jacob. “Before visitors were allowed to get in. But with COVID it gets worse, ”she said.
