Fire Chief Jason Whiteley believes arson was the cause of a fire that began in the Walmart store in North Bay.

He says the call is around 9pm. 45 o’clock received. m. Firefighters and the triggered sprinkler system were able to extinguish the fire quickly. Nobody was injured.

« When we got there, we found something in the clothing department that we believe was deliberately set on fire, » Whiteley told BayToday.

« Firefighters were very quick to put out the fire using the building’s suppression system, but there appears to be some significant damage from smoke and water. We are waiting to see if the health unit will react about the food there. « 

A photo of smoke coming off a clothes rack at Walmart began circulating around the store Friday night, was evacuated, and some employees were sent home.

Ontario Fire Marshall is expected to be there on Saturday morning to assist the fire department and police in their investigation.

We have to go to the firefighter’s office in the morning to investigate with us and the police.

Whiteley says it is too early to provide a damage estimate as he believes the smoke and water damage in the large department store is great.

The fire chief is concerned that Walmart fires recently broke out across the province.
