Both provinces reported new cases of COVID-19 on Monday after the alarming number of cases rose over the weekend in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick
Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador are temporarily withdrawing from the Atlantic Bubble for at least two weeks after a surge in COVID-19 cases in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
Newfoundland and Labrador Prime Minister Andrew Furey announced today that anyone coming to the province from the other Atlantic provinces must now self-isolate for 14 days, as other visitors do.
« The Atlantic Bubble has been a source of pride . . . but the situation has changed, « Furey said during a COVID-19 press conference Monday. “I made the tough decision to take a break.
Now trips to and from Newfoundland and Labrador will only be for essential reasons, he explained. However, individuals entering Newfoundland and Labrador from elsewhere in Atlantic Canada are not required to apply for a travel exemption and may, under certain circumstances, apply for previous COVID-19 testing to reduce self-isolation time. He says the measure will be re-evaluated in two weeks.
Prince Edward Island Prime Minister Dennis King announced in an unscheduled briefing today that his province is suspending all non-essential trips to the island for two weeks, beginning shortly after midnight on Monday.
« This is an extra layer of caution, » said King, who spoke to his Atlantic colleagues on Sunday. “We hope that we can break the chain of transmission. ”
The news comes after a surge in COVID-19 cases over the weekend in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Nova Scotia reported 19 new cases over the weekend, bringing the total number of active infections to 44. New Brunwsick, on the other hand, confirmed over 29 new cases of the virus over the weekend, restoring pandemic hotspot restrictions in the Moncton and Saint John regions.
« The past few days have shown that our neighbors in Atlantic Canada, particularly Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, are experiencing a second wave, » said Dr. . Heather Morrison, P.. . E.. . I am the chief physician for health. « Indeed, it is likely that P. . E.. . I. will have cases.
The province has discovered a new case of COVID-19 after a woman in her forties traveled outside the Atlantic bubble.
Newfoundland and Labrador have also confirmed two new cases of COVID-19, including an elementary school student in Deer Lake and a man who traveled to the province from Manitoba.
The provinces joined the Atlantic Bubble in July, which allowed residents of the Atlantic provinces to move freely between the provinces without isolating themselves.
