Tons of Steve Smith and Aaron Finch followed by a good show with the ball from Adam Zampa and Josh Hazlewood saw Australia beat India in their first day international at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday. With 375 wins, India could only manage 308-8 in response as the goal turned out to be too big to climb even on a field in Sydney that offered little to bowlers.

India got off to an excellent start, but lost opening player Mayank Agarwal (22) in the sixth game. Virat Kohli (21), Shreyas Iyer (2) and KL Rahul (12) all departed in quick succession and the visitors fluctuated at 101-4.

A 128-run stand for the fifth wicket between Hardik Pandya (90) and Shikhar Dhawan (74) stabilized the ship and gave India hope. However, Zampa would remove Dhawan and Pandya and put Australia back in the driver’s seat.

Ravindra Jadeja (25), Navdeep Saini (29) and Mohammed Shami (13) played valuable cameos, but the overhaul of the target was too big of a job without one of their main batsmen being present.

Centuries ago, Skippers Finch and Smith burned when Australia set India a daunting goal. The Indians who came out of the coronavirus quarantine looked rusty on their first taste of international cricket since February when the Australians ran to 374-6 after winning the throw.

Finch buckled on 114 and shared an opening score of 156 with David Warner in perfect shot conditions before Warner scored 69 of 75 balls.

Smith was a little lucky early on before taking his 105 out of 66 balls with four sixs. He was picked up by DRS after a confident call to leg before the wicket on Jan.. saved. It was judged that the ball had just removed the stumps.

Shikhar Dhawan then missed Smith’s Miscue for 38 long, much to the annoyance of bowler Ravindra Jadeja, when the ball dripped into the ropes.

Finch raised his 17. ODI century and was looking for 114 of 124 balls to steer a Jasprit Bumrah lifter behind the wicket, only to be in 40. to be packed by KL Rahul.

Finch was born on Jan.. massively sacked when Jadeja missed the stumps and the Australian skipper expected he would go out.

Marcus Stoinis was out for a duck with the first ball, was caught trying to play chahal from behind the foot, and made way for Glenn Maxwell, who entertained with a turbo-charged 45 of 19 balls.

Marnus Labuschagne only lasted two balls before going to Dhawan. Alex Carey was on Jan.. unbeaten.

India had not played international cricket since a New Zealand tour earlier this year and it became apparent that the outfield was at times ragged. In contrast, Australia came into play after beating over 50-year-old world champions England in September.

The first litter was an uphill battle for India. Quarantine requirements and the recent coronavirus outbreak in Melbourne made matters difficult.

But Cricket Australia desperately wanted the blockbuster tour, which also includes four tests, with the funds raised by the Covid-19 shutdown after the hard shutdown of the sport.

Before the game, both teams formed a ceremonial barefoot circle to recognize the traditional indigenous owners of the SCG land.

Both teams also observed a minute’s silence when Australia took on the great Dean Jones, who died of a heart attack in India last September.
