The Crown Promenade will be home to a ton of international tennis stars. The start date for the Australian Open next year is set in the coming days.
One of the Crown hotels in Southbank – most likely Promenade, not Towers – will be turned into a tennis quarantine center when players arrive in Melbourne.
Sources close to the negotiations between Tennis Australia and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) believe Crown will be one of two or three hotels that will accommodate tennis players.
As The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald reported last week, the ATP has told players that they can practice during a 14-day quarantine period.
This means that players and their followers must drive directly from their hotels to and from the tennis center without having any contact with the public.
TA, DHHS and the Andrews administration were engaged in talks Monday night, although belief is growing that a solution will be reached by Tuesday’s close of business.
Sources in the conversations have said the original launch date was Jan.. January was as good as rejected. The 25th. January is still an option, but 1st. February or even the 8th. February was the most likely start date.
Nine – the moderator of the Australian Open and owner of this imprint – waited to be informed of the revised date late on Monday evening.
Hotel quarantine – with the ability to train – is mandatory for all players and their support staff.
While the possibility of players renting private land with gyms and exercise facilities was raised in talks, a source in the negotiations said the DHHS would not allow it.
The ATP informed the players at the end of last week that the quarantine period was expected to start on March 8th. January, but also advised them not to book a trip yet.
« The number of people who can enter Australia is currently strictly limited. A possible Australian Open push-back for one or two weeks is still likely, « the note said.
« The final definition of the COVID-19 protocols, tight contract procedures and player support teams will be released shortly. «
The players are eagerly awaiting advice from Tennis Australia. A likely delay in the tournament will affect the remainder of the season.
Prime Minister Daniel Andrews announced Monday that no private security guards will be involved in the state’s redesigned hotel quarantine program.
International travelers will arrive at Melbourne Airport next Monday. This is the first time since July that international flights, other than New Zealand, have arrived.
