Abu Dhabi: Daria Kasatkina and Maria Sakkari won their opening games on Wednesday when the women’s tennis season began at the Abu Dhabi Open.
The WTA launched the Abu Dhabi tournament last month to give players more time to prepare for the Australian Open, which has been postponed from its usual January dates to mid-February due to the coronavirus pandemic. It will be the only warm-up tournament outside of Melbourne.
After the event in Abu Dhabi, players will either fly to Australia on charter flights before going into quarantine or travel the short distance to Dubai to watch the Australian Open To play qualifying.

« The first game after a long stop is never easy, » said Kasatkina. « I wasn’t that nervous, but I felt my stomach a little. »
Kasatkina added that she didn’t mind spending time alone, which she did better than most to adjust to quarantine measures ahead of the Australian Open.
« For a lot of players it’s difficult with the protocols and everything « said Kasatkina. « I’m okay to sit in the room for a long time. »
The ninth Sakkari had four breakpoints, but saved them all in a 6: 4, 6: 2 win over Anastasia Potapova. The Greek player will face either Coco Gauff or Ulrikke Eikeri in the second round.
Two seeded players were eliminated when Veronika Kudermetova No. 10 defeated Anett Kontaveit 7: 5, 6: 1 and the American Bernarda Pera on hers Path to the fall of Donna Vekic 7: 6 (10), 2: 6 won a marathon tiebreaker. 6-4.
Yulia Putintseva defeated Martina Trevisan 6-3, 6-3. In a match between two of last year’s Australian Open quarter-finalists, Ons Jabeur won 7-6 (5), 6-3 against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
