Felipe Drugovich comfortably won the Formula 2 main race in Bahrain as the Brazilian celebrated his third win of the season.
Felipe Drugovich won the Formula 2 race in Bahrain with a comfortable winner as the Brazilian celebrated his third win of the season.
Thanks to the excellent tire management in the first stint of the race, Drugvoich was able to achieve a dominant victory with over 14 seconds ahead of Callum Ilott and Jehan Daruvala.
Mick Schumacher recovered from tenth place on the grid and finished fourth, which means that his lead over Ilott in the championship is 12 points with three races left.
Drugovich started on the front row next to title contender Ilott, started better and took the lead in Turn 1.
Ilott finished in second place ahead of Marcus Armstrong and the fast starting Schumacher, who won four places before the start before aggressively attacking Guanyu Zhou in turns 5 and 6.
Schumacher’s decision to start with the harder rubber appeared to be a masterpiece in the early stages as he overtook Ilott on lap 9 at Turn 1 before passing Armstrong later on the lap after a mistake by the ART driver.
The net lead of the race changed hands due to the pit stops. Ilott prevailed over Drugovich as the MP Motorsport driver tried to get his new hard tires up to temperature.
At one point, Drugovich – who stopped four laps later than Ilott – did light work for the British and eventually opened a 14th. 8s gap to claim his fourth win of the campaign.
Schumacher was ahead of Ilott before the pit stop, but had difficulty recovering when he finally made his pit stop on lap 19.
Daruvala stayed on his first podium when Schumacher appeared to be particularly careful when attempting to overtake the title on the line in the final laps.
Nikita Mazepin had a solid race and used the difficult to medium strategy to finish fifth. Yuki Tsunoda bounced back from the grid and finished sixth to keep his hopes for third place in the championship alive.
Armstrong finished in seventh place ahead of Robert Shwartzman, who was one of the first to stop because of hard tires, but maintained enough speed to secure pole position on the back grid.
