7 charged in Rockford protest

ROCKFORD — Seven people, including a 13-year-old girl, were charged during protests Friday evening in the city’s downtown, police said Saturday.

The arrests again stemmed from protesters continually marching along crosswalks in a manner that police said impedes traffic. Authorities have warned demonstrators that those who obstruct motorists will be arrested.

The arrests happened both outside Rockford City Market and a block east at the intersection of State and Madison Streets.

Police expanded the designated area for protesting on Friday to include an additional section of North Water Street, adjacent to Joe Marino Park, and a section of the south side of the East State Street sidewalk.

Protests against racism and police brutality have taken place on five consecutive weekends outside of Rockford City Market.
